| The main (south) wing of the house is
middle or late Tudor in its general appearance and layout, and would have
had granite mullioned windows (including, probably, a double-height window
to the Great Hall) before it was remodelled by the Rev. Walter Radcliffe
between 1790 and 1830. His Architect was John Foulston, a pupil of Nash,
who designed many fine buildings in Devon and Cornwall (the most notable
perhaps being the Egyptian house in Penzance). He also designed an
entirely new wing behindthe hall, containing a billiard room and bedrooms
with fine gothic detailing.
The Great Hall is stylistically a
fascinating mixture of elements from the sixteenth century (the granite
fireplace and arches) the seventeenth century (the unusual incised plaster
decoration in the ceiling) and the eighteenth century (the galleries and
the staircase) while retailing its traditional medieval layout.
